Sat down to lunch with a Righty friend of mine. Well, he leans right, but he's more of a moderate, like most Americans. He offered a profound disappointment that these three candidates are the best that 200 million have to offer, Then he said something amazing with regard to Obama. He likened Obama's promises to pull out of Iraq and and take on the military industrial complex to JFK, RFK and ML King, and that any true reformer will ultimately be ruined or worse by intrests loyal to their own power and financial interests rather than for the good of the nation
Stick with me here righties. This isn't a bumper sticker, pseudo-mastabatory thought here. There is some complexity which seems to stymie and offend the neanderthal right. GE and its subsidiaries were not just contributors to the Bush campaigns but recipients to no bid contracts in Iraq. I know FOX berates MSNBC, owned by GE for being liberal. The station's feud is really just a populist show, hoping we'll all tune in to both to see the day's latest spats. Political shows in this country are the new Vaudeville. While we all tune in for the show we are losing sight of what the real news and issues are.
An unscientific, but thoroughly disgusting survey of network news this morning revealled something sinister and deadly to the democratic process in a formerly free nation. There is no discourse about the positions of the candidates. Nowhere are there complex and nuanced discussions about the economy, the war, our society. The coverage is a he said-she said parade of pap. It's about the soap opera and not the substance.
More than that, after building him up, corporate America, the ones profiting off the war, the ones who would lose market share if the people took back the political process in this country are demostrating their absolute power by destroying the Obama they created. The Jeremiah Wright issue was manufactured, hammered continuously, and eclipsed real news and issues. The corporate media had propelled Obama to stardom, and now it was time to put the uppity little colored boy in is place.
Think I'm being too paranoid? What is Obama's health care plan. Not the sound bite fer-it-or-again-it crap, but what are the details. Don't know? Join the club. I don't know and I'm an Obama supporter. It's the same with the other candidates as well. Sadly the candidates now design their slogans and positions to pander to the lowest common denominator.
Is anyone listening? Does anyone care? Such is the state of our democracy
