The so-called assassin of Benizir Bhutto is a pro-Taliban thug named Mehsud, with deep ties to Pakistani military and intelligence services. His hands are covered in blood with acts in Afghanistan, inside Pakistan and Kashmir, where Pakistani fundamentalist militants are fighting a proxy war in that disputed Indian province. The Pakistani's claim Mehsud bragged about responsibility for the hit.
Can anyone tell me the last time Al Qa'eda disavowed responsibility in any operation they undertook? The answer to the question is never. They either celebrate the accomplishment or glowingly praise the martyrdom of those involved. Furthermore, leaders of an operation, or their lieutenants always meet with their would-be shehids to pray, and then are careful to praise the sacrifice and accomplishments of the martyred shehid. It is imperative to the culture, and to deviate from that fundamental part of the operation and recruitment of future shehids would be catastrophic to the future of Al Qa'eda. None of those things happened.
The question now is when will Mehsud die conveniently in a shootout with Pakistani security forces, and how soon will FOX NEWS celebrate the news as case closed? Whether he was a dupe, had some function in the wider plot, was a go between or had recently run afoul of someone in the Pakistani government is less important now as keeping him from a court of law where he can start naming names in Pakistan's corrupt Bush administration protected dictatorship. Sorry Mehsud, but your days are number. Remember, you heard it here first.
