The latest video and eyewitness reports shred the governments tales about how she died. Remember they claimed she struck her head on the vehicle and that's what killed her, but persistent reports of a second gunman, a sniper remain. A new video from the rear right and slightly above the motorcade show her seemingly hit and going down, or at the very least, reacting to the initial pistol shots from the crowd.
Aids to Bhutto told the BBC that she was bleeding profusely from one or more gunshot wounds, and that she had to be transferred to another vehicle en route to the hospital. That vehicle was also drenched in her blood, more consistent with a severe neck or open head wound than a so-called bump on the head.
So far the government is keeping quiet about the identity of the gunman, a clean cut looking young man in still photos. Wouldn't his identity help prove the government's case about the murder being an Al Qa'eda operation? Unless his identity would reveal that the ISI or Musharraf cronies are involved. More likely the government are actively working to erase those links. Pakistani history would show that to be a bloody affair.
Mehsud, the accused Al Qa'eda "mastermind" continues to deny involvement, and Osama bin Laden in his recent howdy to humanity made no mention. In an organization where the shehid is everything that is unheard of not to at least acknowledge the sacrifice of a martyr. In that part of the world that might just get you a blood feud from your allies.
Meanwhile, Bhutto's 19 year old son was named her successor to lead the party. In a speech yesterday he all but accused the Musharraf regime, telling supporters that the "best revenge is democracy,"His father would oversee the party until he completes his studies abroad. He's a gutsy kid with a great deal to lose. In the wilds of Pakistani politics lets hope he can keep a clear focus on what is best for the Pakistani people. His father was convicted on fraud charges in the eighties, but no one in power in Pakistan has clean hands. But the alternatives, continued dictatorship, civil war, or an Islamic regime far outweigh the Bhutto family attempts at reform and democracy.
